At RAFT, we’re always exploring new ways to help educators bring hands-on STEAM learning into the classroom. With support from the Cisco Foundation, RAFT launched an AI-enabled chatbot designed to help teachers confidently implement STEAM lessons and provide more personalized learning support for students.

This tool acts like a digital teaching assistant, helping educators adapt lessons, answer student questions, and deepen scientific understanding during hands-on activities.

Chatbot

Helping Teachers Teach with Confidence

RAFT’s AI chatbot is designed to reduce barriers to implementation and make it easier for educators to use RAFT’s STEAM Kits and curriculum effectively. The chatbot can help educators:

  • Modify RAFT lessons for different grade levels and learning needs
  • Support lesson planning and preparation before class
  • Assist with real-time classroom questions while students are working on projects

By offering immediate guidance and suggestions, the chatbot allows teachers to spend less time troubleshooting and more time facilitating meaningful learning experiences.

A Vision for the Future of STEAM Support

RAFT’s long-term vision is to develop the chatbot into a powerful support tool for multiple audiences, including educators, students, and families alike. This 2026, the chatbot aims to support four main user groups:

Empower Educators

Provide support for STEAM Kit use, lesson planning, integration of activities into existing curriculum, substitute planning, and after school troubleshooting

Inspire Elementary Students

Offer a playful, engaging, and intuitive interface to foster curiosity and creativity, including offering activity add-ons and extension ideas

Bridge Accessibility

Improve inclusivity for different learning styles, lexile levels, and languages to meet the needs of an evolving classroom

Engage Parents

Help parents stay engaged in independent, creative learning by pairing STEAM Kits with the chatbot’s easy-to-understand guidance.

Learning and Improving Along the Way

Since its launch, RAFT collected feedback from educators and students to improve the chatbot experience.

Early testing has highlighted several opportunities for improvement, including:

  • Simplifying responses so they are less text-heavy
  • Adding visual guides and illustrations for kit assembly and activities
  • Adjusting reading levels for younger elementary students
  • Improving the user interface and navigation on the RAFT website
  • Integrating the chatbot more directly with specific kits and other curriculum offerings

These insights are helping shape the next phase of development.

What’s Next

In the coming months, RAFT will continue testing the chatbot with educators, STEAM events, and partner schools to refine its design, usability, and classroom impact. Planned improvements include visual content, improved prompts, and a more intuitive interface. This work represents an exciting step forward in expanding how educators and students interact with hands-on learning tools.

By combining STEAM Kits with intelligent digital support, RAFT is creating new opportunities for educators to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence in the classroom.
