Our Mission & Story

For three decades, RAFT has turned surplus materials into hands-on learning — here is how we started and where we are going.

Our Mission

RAFT’s mission is to help educators transform a child’s learning experience through hands-on education — one that inspires the joy and discovery of learning.

Our Story

RAFT was founded in 1994 by Mary Simon, a local teacher who realized recycled materials could transform the classroom. She convinced Bay Area companies to donate surplus otherwise bound for the landfill, and RAFT built a sustainable model — repurposing those materials into activities tied to Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards.
