Groovy Machines

Grades: TK-8
Duration: 15 / 30 Hours

Campers think like toymakers as they study simple machines and create unique prototypes of toys and playgrounds. They apply their learning while engaging in several maker challenges highlighting the design and purpose of various machines, then design and build interactive automata: mechanical devices that move.

What campers do

Simple machines as fun

Students study simple machines, including the screw, pulley, wheel and axle, lever, wedge, and ramp (inclined plane), as components for creating fun, engaging toys and challenges.

Maker challenges

They apply their learning through several dedicated maker challenges, where they design and prototype unique items and learn how these basic machines provide a mechanical advantage.

Culminating project

The program culminates in a design challenge where campers collaborate to design and build an imaginative, full-scale playground model that effectively utilizes and showcases various types of simple machines for interactive play.
