RAFT STEAM and Design Thinking Lab Summer Programs
In July 2018 & 2019, RAFT partnered with Infinity Collegiate Academy to pilot a STEAM-focused summer school. Over the course of five weeks, students identified a global challenge and took advantage of our large warehouse of creative reuse materials to prototype solutions. Through empathy, collaboration, teamwork, and the opportunity to share their work solutions, students developed critical social-emotional skills as well.
RAFT Virtual STEAM Summer Camp
In response to COVID-19 and shelter-in-place regulations, RAFT created a virtual STEAM and Design Thinking Lab Summer program in 2020. This week-long, hands-on online program was designed for students ages eight through twelve so they could design and build prototype solutions for our communities’ greatest challenges. The course guided students through the design thinking process and encouraged creativity, fun, and collaboration. RAFT was able to offer this virtual summer program again for 2021.
Future Summer Programming
We will continue to expand our summer programming. In addition to offering a STEAM-focused camp, we plan to create a “summer camp in a box” model. We hope to make available the learning activities, creative reuse materials, and STEAM project kits we developed for our camps to other programs and organizations that seek to accelerate STEAM learning opportunities for their students.
