Empowering Newcomers Through Hands-On STEAM Learning

In Summer 2024, students at Oak Grove School District’s Newcomer Summer Academy embarked on an innovative hands-on STEAM adventure. Through RAFT’s creative reuse materials and engaging activity kits, 75 students explored the mysteries of space while strengthening their English language skills, guided by 3 dedicated teachers.

Hands-on learning is particularly effective for English Learners (ELs), encouraging engagement, problem-solving, collaboration, and a sense of belonging. RAFT’s use of creative reuse materials and student-led activities enhances these benefits, making learning both accessible and meaningful.

For the nine-day, half-day program, RAFT provided over 30 hours of content and all necessary hands-on materials. The district incorporated the English Language Roadmap Principles to support EL learning and integrated educational frameworks such as SCCOE’s My Name, My Identity initiative and SEAL’s Language Identity & Diversity approach. Daily Morning Meetings and targeted social skills development helped create a welcoming environment where students felt confident to explore, create, and grow.

RAFT’s DreamBox content allows districts to customize support for all learners. With materials, activities, and content provided, districts can focus on instructional best practices to accelerate student outcomes.
