RAFT Virtual STEAM Summer Camp

Weekly Design Thinking Labs

This week-long hands-on online program is designed for students ages 9 through 11 who want to design and build prototype solutions for our community’s greatest challenges. The course will encourage creativity, fun, and collaboration as well as guide students through the design thinking process. Students will use creative reuse materials and RAFT’s STEAM Learning Activities to reinforce and be introduced to Next Generation Science Standards with convergent and divergent design challenges. At the end of the week’s Virtual STEAM Summer Camp, students will be given the opportunity to present their design solution to community members. Students who rise to the weekly challenges will earn a Design Thinking Certificate and have begun developing their online STEAM and Design Thinking Portfolio.

Key Features include:

  • Live teacher for 3 hours per day
  • Students work together in small teams on STEAM design challenges
  • Hands-on materials delivered to your door
  • Real-world and content-rich with STEAM lessons
  • Design Thinking Certificate
  • Three different courses, each with a different theme: air, earth, and sea

The theme of this week will revolve around things that can fly. What is aerodynamics and how can one use that to address engineering and community challenges will be discussed in this week long virtual class. From rockets to catapults, students will be challenged with making many designs that will have them soaring through STEAM content. Plus, they will be guided through an interactive narrative that engages their engineering and artistic mind.

The theme of this section will rev up learning about how to travel across Earth and the moon. We will discuss many questions about traveling across, through, and up the earth’s and the moon’s structures. Students will get to create original and classic dynamic designs that work best for moving across land and up mountains and consider gravitational variables too! Plus, they will be guided through an interactive narrative that engages their engineering and artistic mind.

The theme of this week will be designs that float on water. What are the properties of water and how can we use that to solve classic engineering and design challenges as well as create social solutions for our community will be discussed throughout this week long virtual class. Plus, they will be guided through an interactive narrative that engages their engineering and artistic mind.
