Below is a list of the workshops that RAFT is currently offering.

Introduction to 3D Printing with Prusa MK4 and PrusaSlicer

This 1-hour introductory class is designed to familiarize participants with 3D printing using the Prusa MK4 printer and PrusaSlicer software. Participants will learn the basic concepts of 3D printing, explore the features of the Prusa MK4 printer, and understand how to prepare 3D models for printing using PrusaSlicer.

Agenda:
• Introduction to 3D Printing
• Overview of Prusa MK4 Printer
• Introduction to PrusaSlicer
• Basic 3D Printing Process
• Slicing and Printing
• Troubleshooting and Maintenance
• Q&A Session

By the end of the class, participants will have a solid understanding of the 3D printing process using the Prusa MK4 printer and PrusaSlicer software. They will be equipped with the knowledge to start their own 3D printing projects and troubleshoot common issues effectively.

When: Thursdays @ 5:30pm - 6:30 pm

RENEWABLE ENERGY WORKSHOP SERIES

As part of RAFT Environmental Literacy initiatives, and in collaboration with Ignited and funded by Electrify America, we are offering a series of free workshops focused on renewable energy. If you are a middle school teacher looking for FREE hands-on activities that explore renewable energy, provide engineering skills and align to NGSS science standards, please join us! You will have lots of fun as you play with the kits and share suggestions for integrating them into existing science curricula. You’ll walk away with a classroom set of each for use with your students. The descriptions for each of the FREE workshops in the series are below. You can sign up for multiple sessions using the registration button.

Workshop 1: Platform Car Investigation (90 minutes)

The first workshop in the series covers our Platform Car activity kit. This car moves easily due to its simple wheel and axle system and use of low friction wheels, leading to fun and intriguing motion experiments using gravity. With a few extra parts it can even be powered via a rubber band and propeller! Learn how to assemble the cars and gain useful facilitation strategies for leading students through investigations of forces & motion and energy!

When: Saturday May 4, 2024 @ 10:00 - 11:30 am

Where: 1355 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose CA 95131

Workshop 2: The Electric Wind Generator (90 minutes)

The second workshop in the series focuses on the RAFT Electric Wind Generator. This kit leverages recyclable materials to harness wind and generate clean, renewable electric energy. You will experiment with different windmill blades that are later connected to a small DC electric motor that converts energy from the wind into electrical energy that lights LEDs. When used on a large scale, electric windmills can generate the power needed by towns and cities without consuming fossil fuels or any limited natural resources. Learn tips for assembly and facilitation strategies for leading students through investigations of windmill blade design and its effect on the generation of clean energy.

When: Saturday May 11, 2024 @ 10:00 - 11:30 am

Where: 1355 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose CA 95131

Workshop 3: The Wind-O-Meter (90 minutes)

In the third workshop in the series you will build an anemometer using recyclable materials and use it to measure the speed of air generated by a fan or by a natural source of wind. You will experiment with how the wind speed varies with multiple fan speeds and with the anemometer at various distances from the fan blades. Investigate the effect of changing the diameter of the anemometer on its rotation speed and account for these changes when calculating wind speed. Learn tips for assembly and facilitation strategies for leading students through investigations of anemometer usage, wind speed measurement, and weather & climate with this cleverly-designed activity!

When: Saturday May 11, 2024 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Where: 1355 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose CA 95131
